Not-So-Brief Summary of My Vacation Part II

My stay in Santiago was short -in total, I spent seven days there- the rest of the time, I was in the Northern part of the country and a couple of days in the South of Peru. My time in the capital of Chile, was even shortened by one day in bed because of a bad cold. But I still managed to visit several places, although, there were three places I would have loved to see, but could never get to: San Cristobal's Hill, Bellavista Neighborhood at night, and The Bellas Artes Museum. I have to leave something for next time, I guess...


NO-TAN-BREVE RESUMEN DE MIS VACACIONES PARTE II

Mi estadia en Santiago fue corta -en total estuve solo una semana alli- el resto del tiempo lo pase en el norte del pais, y un par de dias en el sur del Peru. Esta pasada fue aun mas breve por un dia perdido en cama debido a un fuerte catarro. De todas formas, pude visitar varios lugares, aunque hubieron tres puntos que me hubiese encantado visitar y a los cuales no llegue: el Cerro San Cristobal, el Barrio Bellavista en la noche, y el Museo de Bellas Artes. Bueno, me imagino que tengo que dejar algo para una proxima vez ...

Los juegos infantiles en la Plaza Brasil; atras se ve la Iglesia y Convento de La Preciosa Sangre. La escritora Teresa Wilms Montt, estuvo alli enclaustrada en contra de su voluntad; Vicente Huidobro la saco de alli y se la llevo a la Argentina y despues a Europa donde se hizo famosa como escritora.



This building across Brazil Square already existed when the wealthier people in Santiago started to build their residences there in the middle of the XIX century ..... Este edificio en frente de la Plaza Brasil ya existia cuando los mas adinerados de Santiago comenzaron a construir sus residencias alli en la mitad del siglo XIX.



Neo-gothic style architecture is prevalent at Brazil Neighborhood. This Coffee Shop sells all kind of alcoholic beverages from vodka to beers and also, one can have a great lunch for US$5 ..... La arquitectura de estilo neogotica es prevalente en el Barrio Brasil. Este "Cafe" vende desde vodka hasta diversos tipos de cervezas y se puede almorzar muy bien por USD$5.



My cousin lives a few steps from old Brazil Square, in a contrastingly modern community-style building which I really liked..... Mi prima vive a unos pasos de la vieja Plaza Brasil, en un edificio contrastantemente moderno, tipo-comunidad que me gusto mucho.



He is one the four younger members of my family..... El es uno de los cuatro miembros mas jovenes de mi familia.







Actually, this one is the youngest member of the family because he is only two months; his name is Aleh ..... En realidad, este es el miembro mas joven de la familia porque tiene solo dos meses; su nombre is Aleh.



Downtown Santiago, a mix of old and new architecture; this is the Brokerage..... El centro de Santiago, una mezcla de arquitectura antigua y moderna, esta es La Bolsa.





An excellent vegetarian restaurant with a lot of tradition, downtown Santiago, "El Naturista". At lunch time, people are literally waiting for you to finish eating so they can get your table, but everybody is very polite and service is fantastic ..... Un excelente restaurant vegetariano con mucha tradicion en el centro de Santiago, El Naturista. A la hora de almuerzo, la gente esta esperando que uno termine de comer para conseguir una mesa, pero todos son muy corteses y la atencion es fantastica.



"El Huerto" another fantastic vegetarian restaurant; this one is located at the Providencia neighborhood ..... El Huerto, otro fantastico restaurante vegetariano; esta localizado en el Barrio Providencia.

My cousins again, here with the other two younger members of the family. They make one of the most perfect couples I've ever met...... Mis primos nuevamente, aca con los otros dos miembros mas jovenes de la familia. Ellos forman una de las parejas mas perfectas que he conocido.



When I first moved to this part of the US, restaurants with outside seating -like this one- were not easy to find, and I used to miss them so much! ..... Cuando recien llegue a esta parte de USA, los restaurantes con mesas al aire libre como este no se encontraban casi por ningun lado; los extranaba terriblemente!

Fountains and water cascade on one side of La Moneda by the steps that go down to the Cultural Center/Museum underneath this promenade ..... Fuentes y cascada de agua a un lado de La Moneda a lo largo de los escalones que llevan al Centro Cultural/Museo abajo de esta promenade.


The Cultural Center underneath La Moneda; they had three exhibits at that time. I saw two: the Spanish legacy and Violeta Parra's ..... El Centro Cultural abajo de La Moneda; tenian tres exposiciones en ese momento, vi dos: acerca del legado espanol y la de Violeta Parra.


I was really impressed with the quality of Violeta Parra's art, oil paintings, needle-work, etc. Violeta was a surprising artist. .... Quede realmente sorprendida por la calidad del arte de Violeta Parra, sus cuadros al oleo, bordados, etc. Una artista sorprendente la Violeta.

Brief Summary of My Vacation Part I

It has been two weeks since I came back from almost a month in Chile. It was a great vacation because many factors contributed to make this trip special in a good way. I want to write this down so the details of what I learned, the people I saw, the places I visited, the experiences I went through are not forgotten in any aspect. If I had to summarize this trip into one sentence or thought, almost impossible to do, but let us say that I am referring to a headline of some sort, would be "Visiting the Past".

For one of those things, or like my Chilean friend "el brujo" Braulio would say, "the forces of nature made it happen", I met, mostly by strange coincidence, and a couple of very well planned encounters, with dear people who were part of my life during my childhood or my college years and whom I had not seen since then. The surprise is that I never thought I would see them again, but such is life, full of cycles and energy ... If Lina, Rafael, Maria Isabel, Pedro, Carlos, Braulio, Patricia read these words, I would like you to know that I thank you for being who you are and for sharing your time, thoughts, feelings, good food, good drinks, and excellent conversations with me during this trip. Meeting each of you, helped me find a part of me which I had forgotten, but that I like very much ... A big hug for all of you!


UN BREVE RESUMEN DE MIS VACACIONES I PARTE

Han sido dos semanas desde que regrese de mis vacaciones por casi un mes en Chile. Fueron muy plenas debido a varios factores que contribuyeron a que este viaje fuese especial de una buena manera. Quiero escribir los detalles de lo que aprendi, la gente que vi, los lugares que visite, las experiencias, para que no se olviden en ningun aspecto. Si tuviese que resumir este viaje en una frase o pensamiento, algo casi imposible de hacer, pero digamos que si tuviese que escribir un titular de algun tipo, este seria "Visitando el Pasado".

Por una de esas cosas, o como mi amigo chileno "el brujo" Braulio diria, "las fuerzas de la naturaleza se conjugaron", me encontre -la mayoria por coincidencias impresionantes y otros encuentros muy bien planificados- con gente muy querida que habia sido parte de mi infancia o del tiempo en la universidad y a quienes no habia visto desde entonces. La sorpresa es que nunca pense que los veria nuevamente, pero asi es la vida, llena de ciclos, historias, y energia ... Si Lina, Rafael, Maria Isabel, Pedro, Carlos, Braulio, Patricia, aquellos con los cuales no me veia hace mucho tiempo, leen estas palabras, sepan que les agradezco por ser quienes son y por compartir su tiempo, pensamientos, sentimientos, buena comida, buena bebida, y excelentes conversaciones conmigo durante este viaje. El encuentro con cada uno de ustedes, me ayudo a recuperar una parte de mi que se habia quedado olvidada pero que me gusta mucho... Vaya un gran abrazo!


On my way to the airport in Baltimore, saying goodbye to cloudy skies in a not so cold December day....... Camino al aeropuerto, despidiendome de los cielos nublados en un dia -no-muy-frio de Diciembre.


This plane is going to take me to Atlanta, so I can continue my trip; it's raining ....... Este avion me llevara a Atlanta para poder continuar my viaje; llueve.

Before jumping on the train that will take me to my flight terminal to continue the trip to Chile, I stop to watch this interesting exhibit of puppets from around the world ... Antes de subirme al tren que me llevara al terminal para tomar mi vuelo a Chile, paro a observar esta interesante exposicion de marionetas antiguas de diversas partes del mundo.


Next day: Santiago, Chile. View from my bedroom's balcony at the hotel where I'm staying. "Blue skies smilin' at me Nothin' but blue skies do I see" [as in Irving Berlin's song] .... El proximo dia: Santiago, Chile. Vista desde la terraza de mi dormitorio en el hotel. "Cielos azules que me sonrien Nada mas que cielos azules es lo que veo" [como la cancion de Irving Berlin].


On my way from the East Side -in Santiago- to the oldest more historical part of the city, along Mapocho river. On the opposite side of the street, the legendary Forestal Park. I did the same route almost every day during this stay in Santiago and I enjoyed it tremendously. .... En camino desde la parte Oriente -de Santiago- hacia la parte mas historica y antigua de la ciudad a lo largo del rio Mapocho. Al lado opuesto de la calle, el mitico Parque Forestal. Esta misma ruta la hice casi todas las dias de mi estadia en Santiago y la disfrutaba tremendamente.


Pio Nono's Bridge crosses over Mapocho River. The large building is University of Chile's Law School [Univesity of Chile was created by Andres Bello, born in Venezuela, however he is a fundamental figure in Chilean history.]..... El puente Pio Nono atraviesa el rio Mapocho. El edificio del fondo es la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Chile [la Universidad de Chile fue creada por Andres Bello, nacido en Venezuela sin embargo, es una figura fundamental en la historia de Chile].


At University of Santiago of Chile to have lunch with a childhood friend who teaches there..... En la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, para almorzar con un amigo de la infancia quien ensena alli.


Running behind my friend, and my sister, on our way to the building that made the biggest impression on me, the Faculty of Artes & Oficios at University of Santiago. This part was built at the beginning of the XIX century..... Corriendo atras de mi amigo y mi hermana rumbo al edificio que me impresiono mas en la Universidad de Santiago, la Facultad de Artes y Oficios. Esta parte fue construida a principios del siglo XIX.

Vista de uno de los halls que rodean la plaza; los ladrillos que forman este edificio han sido testigos de muchas cosas, buenas y malas, en su casi siglo y medio de existencia.


In memory of those University of Santiago students who fought and died at the Battle of Iquique on May 21st during the war of 1879 ..... En memoria de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Santiago que pelearon y murieron en la batalla de Iquique el 21 de Mayo en la guerra de 1879.
