The Power of Words and the Media / El poder de las palabras y de los medios

Last Wednesday, April 4th, Don Imus –a famous radio show host in the US- referred to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed ho’s.” His listeners, which he has by the millions on his morning show, took the comment as many others since Imus has been making, for years, outrageous and frequently crude remarks about “touchy” subjects like race, sex and gender. However, the program was being monitored by Media Matters for America, a watchdog organization, who took note of comment and posted it on the organization’s blog. This action resulted in hundreds of emails/letters complaining to the main network chiefs that carry the Imus show. In the end, after forty years of being on the air, the Don Imus’ show was taken off every radio station in the US; his career destroyed, at least for now.

The controversy is the following. What he said was enough of an insult to make him lose his job of 40 years? Unfortunately, this time, he picked on a team of young athletes that have the sympathy of everybody, so, he could not get away as in the past when he belittled the short, the overweight, etc. while using derogatory language toward them. You can argue, “but it is just fun!” or “No harm intended!”; however, words, especially those being originated in the media, do have weight, and they get in the minds of people, and in many cases, do stay there. The public lesson intended, I believe, will have a strong impact for the rest of society, well, at least, that is the idea.
