Since as long as I can remember, I was always interested in finding out more about Hinduism, and by now I have learned a few things, really a few;I am not just trying to sound humble when I say that, haha ... but I am willing to share the little I know. The whole thing started today when I was in the kitchen at work having a cup of coffee and talking to a few co-workers. One of them thought that Hindus were the same people that commit harakiri. Nobody in the room at the time was sure if the answer was yes or no, well, except for me. This was an extreme case of lack of cultural awareness; it does not happen often at work, I may say.
Just to give you an idea about the amount of people that practice Hinduism, back in January 2001, seventy-million Hindus gathered on the banks of the Ganges River. They were there to celebrate the Maha Kumbha Mela, the greatest religious festival of all time. I remember reading a reporter that said that the crowd was so huge that it was actually visible in satellite photos! If I recall correctly, he said something like it was as if somebody had taken the entire population of the continent of Australia, doubled it, and dropped it down in an area about the size of San Francisco! I just cannot imagine. By the way, the Maha Kumbha Mela is held every twelve years at the same location, and Hindus try to get there from every corner of the world.
Think about this, one out of every six people on Earth is a Hindu, and besides being one of the most important religious movements on Earth, it is also the most ancient. Hinduism cannot be classified as a type of philosophy or a defined religion. It is more than that. It is a large and complex social-religious organism that includes sects, cults, and philosophical systems. It also makes use of various rituals, ceremonies, and spiritual disciplines, as well as the veneration of many gods and goddesses. The spiritual origin of Hinduism is found in the four Vedas, a collection of ancient scriptures, written by anonymous prophets in the old and sacred language of India, Sanskrit.
But, the following is what I like the most about Hinduism, and I will leave you with this; according to this religion, there are four main goals in human life: fulfilling your purpose; prospering; enjoying life, and getting to know God. It sounds smart, isn’t it?

Desde que tengo uso de razon, siempre he estado interesada en saber acerca del hinduismo, y he aprendido unas pocas cosas, son realmente pocas y no estoy tratando de parecer modesta cuando digo esto, jaja ... pero estoy dispuesta a compartir lo poco que sé acerca del tema. Todo esto comenzó hoy día cuando yo estaba en la cocina de mi oficina tomandome un café mientras charlabamos con algunos compaňeros de trabajo. Uno de ellos pensó que los hindues eran los mismos que practicaban el harakiri y nadie en ese momento supo si la respuesta era si o no, bueno, excepto por mí. En todo caso, esto fué extrema falta de información acerca de otras culturas y debo reconocer que no pasa a menudo en mi oficina.
Sólo para darles una idea de la cantidad de gente que practica hinduismo, en Enero de 2001, setenta millones de hindues se juntaron en las riveras del rio Ganges al norte de India. Estaban allí para celebrar el Maha Kumbha Mela, el festival religioso más grande de todos los tiempos. Recuerdo el haber leído a un periodista que dijo que la multitud era tan grande que se podia ver en fotos de satélite! Si recuerdo bien, el dijo que era como si alguien hubiese tomado toda la población del continente de Australia, la hubiesen aumentado una vez más y la hubiesen dejado caer en un área del porte de la ciudad de San Francisco! No me lo puedo siquiera imaginar. A propósito, el Maha Kumbha Mela se celebra cada doce aňos en la misma localidad. Así, hindues de cada esquina del mundo quieren llegar allá.
Piensen en esto, una de cada seis personas en el mundo es hindu, y además de ser una de las religiones más importantes en la Tierra, es la más antigua. No puede ser clasificada como un tipo de filosofía ni religión. Es más que eso. Es un organismo social-religioso muy vasto y complejo. Hace uso de muchos rituales, ceremonias, y disciplinas espirituales, así como también de la veneración de muchos dioses y diosas. El origen espiritual del hinduismo se encuentra en las cuatro Vedas, que es una colección de escrituras antiguas, que fueron escritas por profetas anónimos en lenguaje sánscrito.
Pero lo siguiente es lo que más me gusta acerca del hinduismo y con lo cual los quiero dejar; de acuerdo a esta religión, hay cuatro objetivos principales para vivir: lograr nuestras proprias metas; prósperar, disfrutar de la vida, y llegar a conocer a Dios. Suena inteligente, no?
