Super Things

There are two things that kept and still keep my attention for the last couple of days. One is Super Bowl Sunday -which happened last night- and Super Tuesday, the most decisive political event previous to the election of our new president, which is coming up tomorrow. These two events are American as Apple Pie or … American as saying “have a nice day!”

But, today I will talk about Super Bowl, a highly produced and masterfully marketed American football championship game where the best –or luckiest- two teams play for the title of World Super Bowl champion. Why “World” is included in the title is still a mystery to me, because the competition involves only American teams; however, the significance of the event is major since is the most watched television program of the year in the U.S. Viewers go as high as 140 million tuned into some parts of the game.

So, I was one of these people yesterday, anxiously awaiting mostly two things, to see if the undefeated and perfect, New England Patriots, who never lost one game during the entire season would again display their talent on the field or if the underdogs New York Giants would play so well as to be remembered forever in sport trivia, yes, because nobody ever remembers those who came in second place anywhere, have you ever thought about that? The second thing I was waiting for were the ads played throughout the game. Ever since Ridley Scott –one of my favorite movie directors- made the Macintosh computer ad that played for the first time on a Super Bowl broadcast, I got hooked on paying attention to commercials during this event. Actually, it has become the main showcase for super expensive commercials which are -in some instances- short films of excellent quality.

Only after four hours of eating a lot of heart-attack-on-a-plate type of Super-Bowl food: potato chips and other snacks, chicken wings, empanadas de queso [Chilean dish], apple pie, and one bottle of champagne among other things, we could have an idea of what the outcome of the game would be, because things were not defined until the last two minutes. It was a hard fight which became totally involving; the detailed images on high definition television on a 50 inch screen also contributed to my heart beating so fast seeing such display of force and physical energy at a stadium. New York Giants’ good luck and spontaneity won over the perfect season of the New England Patriots. For a moment, I did not think it was fair that the great effort made by the Patriots to keep a perfect score during the competition would come apart when they needed victory the most, but such is life.

We can plan and give it our best, but in the end the results may be different to what we expected. Therefore, the main satisfaction is not the result in itself, but the fact we made the best possible effort, because just like the team that lost the Super Bowl, we could have a perfect record and life may still bring us unpleasant surprises, but that is part of the fun, isn’t it; the unpredictability, or not?

SUPER COSAS
