I Guess Is About Time

[Oil painting by Andres Zagal]

I guess it has been too long since I posted something on this blog... The oil painting above, I mean, a copy of the oil painting above, is right next to my computer at work. I have it there, so I can look at the bright and promising scene when I start to feel the need for fresh air. "If I walk that trail, I'll be at the beach"... I think. Well, supposedly, life is what we live now; it is not the past, it is not the future, but dreaming of walking in between those pine trees to go to the beach on the other side, is too deliciously appealing to me.

Imagino Que Ya Era Tiempo

Leyendo a Whitman...

CHAINS

Today, I got off from work much later than usual. It was about 8pm when I pulled out of my parking space at work only to realize I was running very low on gas which meant I had to stop at the gas station across the street. Although, we are distantly surrounded by established and quiet residential neighborhoods, my building is in a suburban area occupied by office buildings and hotels. There are no sidewalks, only roads for easy access to and from the large parking lots around each building. It is unusual to see someone walking on the street with the exception of those who do it for fitness during the day.

Far from the lights of the gas station, I saw a thin, blonde woman walking; she caught my attention for a second. I proceeded to pump gasoline into my car, got back into my driver’s seat and as I was pulling out, I saw the woman again, this time looking in my direction and making some kind of signals with her hands. I was not sure if she was addressing me or someone behind. "Maybe there is something wrong with my tires", I thought, "and she is trying to let me know." As she approached me, I lowered my window to listen to what she was saying and then I could see her well. She was probably in her middle 30s but looked closer to her 50s, her blonde clean hair pulled up into a pony tail without any particular style. She was extremely thin, rail thin as a matter of fact, and wore a winter jacket that was too large for her frail body and tight jeans. Her face had been very beautiful in a distant past; huge blue eyes shaped as almonds, high cheeks, heart-shaped lips with a lot of little wrinkles around them, result of many years of smoking… She wore make up that look excessive and gave her a harder look. She had a tired face but with a nervous expression. When she opened her mouth to talk to me, I saw she only had two front teeth, one on each side of her mouth.

"My car broke down a few blocks down the road and I need money so I can take the train to get to work. I should have been there forty-five minutes ago, but I don't have money and nobody wants to give me money. People around here have been very mean to me. I just need five dollars and fifty cents, could you please help me out?" I felt so sorry for this woman, not because she did not have that small amount of money, but because at one point in her life she probably, had been a cute little girl dreaming with castles and princes, as all little girls do, but never dreamed of losing her dignity for being a slave to addiction. I looked at my purse next to me without saying a word. She repeated "people have been mean to me; they think I am going to do something bad with their money, but they are wrong, I just need it to get to work..." I only had a few twenty-dollar bills and three one-dollar bills. I handed her three dollars telling her that I did not have any more money. I lied because if I gave her a twenty, she would have put more drugs in her body. She kept repeating… "I will not do anything bad with this money” … “Do what ever makes you happy with this money, it is your body and your decision. Good luck in finding the rest!” I said. She gave me a big smile. I drove away thinking “who am I to give her a lecture?”… after all most of us carry chains that makes us little slaves although in her case her chain was choking her to death.

CADENAS

Ella volvía a repetir…
