I anxiously await for this weekend; it only happens once a year, like birthdays; the kind we have as children when we are not yet concerned with issues of adulthood, and having a reason to wear a funny hat, and get together with friends to eat cake, and to play like crazy sound so pleasurable. I am talking about Artscape an arts festival which starts today at noon and ends Sunday night. It is a Baltimore “thing”, and I do not know who thought about it, but is a brilliant idea and has been happening for many years already. Besides promoting new artists, the business originated from it through the sale of art pieces or the food restaurants offer through their own kiosks specially installed for the occasion must be lucrative based on the number of people attending. The many stages are located outdoor with additional ones located inside buildings, but the whole event is in the area of Mount Vernon including the Baltimore School for the Arts.
There, in the past I have seen and danced at the beat of Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, The Who, Rubén Blades, Pat Metheny … uh! and Quetzal, a group that plays a mix of Andean/jazz fusion music, where one of the members, and also the musical arranger, is Roberto Clavijo, a friend from Arica. Tomorrow I will see the new films, but today I want to see Los Lonely Boys if we make it on time to find a spot where to sit on the grass –in this place one gets dirty- it is a privilege if one finds a small place on the grass where to put your derrière, compared to sitting on the pavement! … Nobody can complain; it is free after all. My problem is that Los Lonely Boys are playing at the same time The Isley Brothers are playing, on a different stage, of course … What to do? Who to see? I wish all my conflicts were like this one... :o)

Espero este fin de semana con ansias; es sólo una vez al aňo que sucede, es como una fiesta de cumpleaños pero de esas cuando uno es chica y todavía no está preocupada con los asuntos de la adultez y tener una razón para usar un gorro divertido, juntarse con los amigos a comer torta y jugar como locos son motivos de gran placer. Estoy hablando de Artscape; un festival de las artes que comienza hoy al mediodía y termina el Domingo en la noche. Es una “cosa” de la ciudad de Baltimore y no se a quién se le ocurrió pero es una brillante idea que ya ha estado aconteciendo por muchos aňos. Además de promover nuevos artistas, el comercio que se desarrolla con la venta de las mismas creaciones y la comida que venden los restaurantes en sus proprios kioskos instalados para la ocasión debe ser muy lucrativo a juzgar en base a la enorme cantidad de gente. Los varios escenarios están situados al aire libre con algunos pocos adicionales adentro de los edificios del área que componen el barrio de Mount Vernon centralizados en la Escuela de Arte de Baltimore.
Allí, en aňos pasados, he visto y bailado al compás de la música de Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, The Who, Rubén Blades, Pat Metheny, por nombrar a algunos … ah! y Quetzal, un grupo que toca una mezcla de música andina y jazz fusion dónde uno de los integrantes y el arreglador musical, es un amigo, el ariqueňo Roberto Clavijo. Maňana veré los nuevos filmes, pero hoy quiero ver a Los Lonely Boys, si es que llegamos lo suficientemente temprano como para encontrar un lugar donde sentarnos encima del pasto –este lugar es para ir a ensuciarse- si es que hay un pedacito de pasto dónde poner el derriére es un privilegio, comparado a sentarse en el pavimento! … Uno no se puede quejar, es gratis después de todo. Mi problema es que Los Lonely Boys tocan a la misma hora que The Isley Brothers, en otro escenario por supuesto … Que hacer? A quién veo? Ojalá todos mis conflictos fuesen así como éste ... :o)
