Aruba and Arica
My cousins, on my husband’s side of the family, just came back from a week vacation in Aruba. They took many, many pictures, and I selected a few to publish here. They are a cute and happy couple, I love them! By posting these photos [see them below] I also wanted to share something with my friends in Chile, and that is, how come that Arica having a few more things going regarding scenery and natural beauty than Aruba, is not getting 1.5 million tourists per year as Aruba does? I know one important reason for the difference in tourism is the long distance between Arica and Europe and/or USA, but still, there are things that can be done on that respect, charter flights being one of them. Aruban economy is based on services that make up for 66.5% of what they do; all of this in an area of only 193 km; slightly larger than Washington, D.C.
When you look at these pictures, notice that the island is bare; they do not have the abundance of colorful plants or palm trees as it is found in Hawaii or in Dominican Republic. They have cactus and rocks of all sizes, and some interesting caves. Besides, they are surrounded by clear water –good for diving. Although, I never visited Aruba, what I write about the scenery is based on all the stories I hear from friends and relatives who have visited this island north of Venezuela. By the way, the palm trees on the picture of the hotel at sunset, are artificially planted. Also, notice the under-water bar at the hotel, now ... excellent hotels, they do not have in Arica.

The cold weather does not want to leave us alone here on the East Coast. By now, I am feeling very nostalgic of the warm weather they have almost year round in Arica, Chile. But it is not only the pleasant weather, there are also those beautiful sunsets. I remember I used to walk along the beach when I lived there, waiting for the sun to get to the right position and then, I would just sit on the beach and wait for the sunset. Since, I have always had music in my mind, meaning I often associate music –stored in my “MP3 brain” haha … to what is happening around me, the beautiful little song below would play often in my head while I watched these marvelous acts of nature. I do not have the sunsets now, but I have the song …
Atardecer
Music and Lyrics: Eduardo Gatti)
[My translation does not do justice to the song, but I tried]
Little by little the sun comes down
Slowly … gets dark
When everything is quiet
When everything stops
I let my eyes float free
I let my body relax
Everything happens silently
From the inside to the outside
It’s like being inside a globe
Where everything happens and there are no questions
From a flying flock
To a snail being born
