After suffering of shoulder pain for too long waiting for my own body to heal itself, I had to change plans when the pain was winning the battle and it would not let me sleep. Yesterday, I went to see the specialist with little hope that pain that had stuck with me for so long would disappear with just seeing a doctor. While I waited, I read a magazine and let my mind wondered. I was thinking that with time, these visits become more frequent. Time flies, in a moment we will be senior citizens with their conversations too often related to health, medicines, friends and family funerals, and the whole thing made me very sad, although it did not make sense to be sad since these are the facts of life, it is the reality. However, there are a lot of older people who suffer from depression, and I am sure that it is related to the same reasons I was thinking about yesterday.
The feeling that the world around us –as we know it- becomes unfamiliar, where many of the dear faces that surrounded us are not there anymore, and have been replaced by others who really do not care about us because they do not know us, they did not grow up with us, or did not have the opportunity to exchange thoughts with us when our minds and bodies worked perfectly. Even those familiar places like favorite restaurants, shops, all of that could also change, and must be very disconcerting. I will always remember on my last trip to Chile when my father was still alive, the two of us went out shopping. These were his last months before he departed this Earth, we knew it, and it was part of our daily conversations. He took me to his favorite store to buy what I needed, but the store did not exist anymore. We asked, and found out that the owner had died, he had been a friend of my father; the place had been transformed into something else in a short time. I saw the surprise on my father’s face and could detect a slight gesture of sadness and disappointment that he tried to hide from me so not to disturb me. But I knew this had affected him; many of his acquaintances had passed away around the same time and one more was a confirmation that his own date was around the corner.
So, I was in the middle of all these thoughts at the doctor's waiting area when a beautiful elderly couple entered the room. They had older faces but their bodies were young. What gave away their seniority were the wrinkles on their faces, but their expression, and their sharp facial features, bright eyes, a full set of hair done in a natural and classic shoulder length haircut style on her; he was totally bald, were those of people full of life. They dressed elegantly. He wore a pair of gray fine wool pants, a double buttoned navy blue blazer, crocodile leather moccasins. She was more casual, but not less elegant with mid-tights length shorts, revealing her beautiful legs, an Oxford shirt, and a cashmere cardigan. It was like looking at Jimmy Stewart and Gloria, his wife. While I secretly stared at them, I kept thinking that when they were children, they lived through the terrible 1930’s depression, the scary II World War, the Golden Age of Hollywood, the turbulent racial segregation, the sadness of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the impressive first steps that took Neil Armstrong on the moon, the Cold War with all its threat of a nuclear attack by Russia, and so on, so much history. They sat down next to me. When the receptionist asked them “are you together?” he answered “yes, for 64 years” cracking a smile on everybody at the waiting room. Because the two of them were sharing a couch, they sat very close to each other, and I heard him telling her in a quite voice “it’s great to be together like this” causing her to laugh. All of this surprised me; it was a message that erased my depressive train of thought of a few minutes before. I could read the message loud and clear, we can live to the end, or almost the end –because there are certain diseases over which we do not have total control- in a harmonious state. Will depend on us, mostly, the rest is up to whatever the Great Architect of the Universe has reserved for us.
