Chilean Art

There is a Chilean movie director, Patricio Schmidt, who got my attention with his eye for meaningful and beautiful short films. They are not commercial films; they are pieces of art that tell stories about the life of the natives in little and forgotten towns and villages in Chile. Ko[Water], his latest short film captures the pace, the colors, the faces, and the scenery of the Southern part of Chile. Even the story itself in Ko, looks and sounds like one of the old tales being passed from generation to generation by the natives who live in those lands. When you watch this short film, let it take you to a world with which we are not familiar. Patricio Schmidt es un director de cine chileno que me llamó la atención por el buen ojo que tiene para hacer cortometrajes llenos de belleza y significado. No son comerciales vale decir; estas son piezas de arte que nos cuentan de historias de los habitantes de pequeños y olvidados pueblitos en Chile. Ko [Agua], su último cortometraje, captura el ritmo, los colores, los rostros y los paisajes del sur de Chile. Incluso, la historia en sí misma en Ko, suena como uno de los cuentos que se pasan de generación en generación por los lugareños que habitan esas tierras. Cuando miren este cortometraje, permítanse ser llevados a un mundo con el cual no estamos familiarizados. Disfruten de las imágenes y los sonidos; el viento, el océano... y abran sus sentidos a la gran energía que nos transmite el agua como elemento principal de este mundo que habitamos. Universos Paralelos

A friend recommended “Déjà vu”[2006], a movie by British director Tony Scott with Denzel Washington as the main character; I watched it last night, and I liked it a lot! It is a love story and a thriller that makes a huge display of the latest surveillance technology and even manages to touch on quantum mechanics. I will not give away the plot; I will only say although this movie could appear to be a science fiction film, in reality is not. Well, I may be stretching it a little bit … Those who saw it, know that -although there is research going on the subject- the time travel part is still science fiction. But, everything else, surveillance through walls or multi-dimensional imaging, the latter currently used in design engineering, are capabilities which do exist in our modern world.

The movie even gives the audience a taste of the Parallel Universes Theory, you know … the one that says there is no one reality, that each of us lives in a separate universe, and where any universe one can imagine actually do exist. So somewhere there would be a universe where Elizabeth Taylor has brown eyes, or where you got married to someone else other than your current spouse, and Bill Gates is a sales employee at CompUSA, and so on. Fascinating, isn’t it? Perhaps the harmony of the theory of parallel universes made me look for my Taoist book today, to revisit once more its beautiful poems and philosophy. Of course, I was amazed, as every time I read it, that these thoughts were written approximately 2500 years BCE; in a parallel universe any of us could have written them :o) ... The following are some of the thoughts I like the most:

There is a thing confusedly formed
Born before heaven and earth
Silent and void
It stands alone and does not change
Goes around and does not weary
It is capable of being the mother of the world
I know not its name
So I style it “the way”
I give it the makeshift name of “the great”


Water is the softest thing on earth
Yet its silken gentleness
Will easily wear away the hardest stone


Be still like a mountain and flow like a great river.

Un amigo me recomendó “Déjà vu” [2006] del director británico Tony Scott con Denzel Washington como el personaje principal; la vi anoche y me gusto un monton! Es una historia de amor y suspenso donde se hace un tremendo despliegue de la ultima tecnologia de vigilancia e incluso explora el campo de la mecánica cuántica. No voy a revelar la trama; solo diré que aunque podría ser clasificado como ciencia ficción, en realidad no lo es. Bueno, puede que esté estrechando un poco las cosas al decir esto… Aquellos que la vieron saben que –aunque los viajes en el tiempo están siendo investigados- todavía son ciencia ficción. Pero todo lo demás, como la vigilancia a través de muros, ó imagenes multi-dimensionales, ya están siendo utilizados, la última se utiliza en ingeniería de diseños.

El film toca el tema de la Teoría de Universos Paralelos, ya saben … esa que dice que no hay una sola realidad, que todos nosotros vivimos nuestra realidad en universos distintos y dónde cualquier universo que uno se pueda imaginar, existe. Así, en algún lugar por ahí habría un universo donde Elizabeth Taylor tiene los ojos café ó dónde nos casamos con una persona distinta de la cual lo estamos en este universo, o dónde Bill Gates es un vendedor en CompUSA, y así. Es fascinante, no? Tal vez por la armonía que existe en la teoría de universos paralelos, hoy me bajaron las ganas de leer mi libro de Tao para visitar algunos de sus hermosos poemas y filosofía. Y como siempre que los leo, quedo asombrada cuando me acuerdo que fueron escritos aproximadamente 2500 años ADC; en un universo paralelo cualquiera de nosotros podría haberlos escrito :o) … Los siguientes son algunos de los pensamientos que mas me gustan:

Existe algo confusamente formado
Nacido antes de los cielos y la tierra
Silencioso y vacío
Existe por si mismo y no cambia
Se mueve y no se cansa
Con la capacidad de ser la madre del mundo
Yo conozco ningún nombre para ésto
Asi lo llamo “el camino”
Lo nombro “lo grande”


El agua es la cosa más suave en la tierra
Sin embargo su sedosa delicadeza
Gastará facilmente la piedra más dura


Sé calmado como una montaña y fluye como un gran río

KO ... a film

… It means “Water” in Mapundungun, the language of the Mapuche Indians [from the South of Chile and Argentina]. What a shame not to be able to speak or at least understand it! When a language starts to disappear, takes the rest of the patrimony with it, everything or almost everything. Fortunately, it looks like there are some efforts being developed in Chile to preserve it; I do not know much about it, but I certainly hope so …

KO is the title of the new short film by Patricio Schmidt. This movie director kicks butt. In my opinion, his taste is fantastic; his films tell stories full of little but important details that talk about life, and deep transcendent events. All this through marvelous photography, and minimalist dialogs, emphasizing even more the power that images have on his films. The first short movie I saw from him is called Huinay, and was filmed in the Altiplano; the colors of this region impregnate this film, yellows, oranges, the blue of the sky … But in Ko, everything is seen through fog or clouds, and the colors are in the range of blue associated to water; the ocean occupies a main rol in this story, as it is in Chiloe and its surroundings where it was filmed. The cycles of life, love, energy from water, all of these are represented in KO. Except for one little detail, I liked this film enormously. When I saw it for the first time a few days ago, the song “Aquamarine” from Gatti came to my mind … [I apologize to my English speaking friends for not translating the song. It is more than a song really, is like a poem and perhaps, it would not even make sense, too much would be lost in translation.]

ESPAŇOL

… Significa “Agua” en Mapundungun, el lenguaje de los Mapuches, que pena no poder hablarlo o por lo menos entenderlo! Cuando se comienzan a desaparecer los lenguajes también se llevan con ellos los legados asociados, o sea, todo o casi todo. Pero afortunadamente, al parecer se están haciendo esfuerzos en Chile por preservarlo, no se mucho al respecto pero espero se pueda …

KO es el título del nuevo cortometraje del cineasta Patricio Schmidt. Este director se las trae; tiene un gusto, a mi parecer fantástico para sus films, que narran historias llenas de detalles pequeňos pero importantes que hablan de la vida y de eventos profundos y trascendentes. Todo ésto principalmente a través de una fotografía maravillosa, con dialogos minimalistas que enfatizan el poder que tienen las imagenes en sus films. El primer cortometraje que ví de él, se llama Huinay y está filmado en el Altiplano y los colores de esa zona impregnan el film, amarillos, naranjas, el azul del cielo … Pero en KO, todo es visto a través de neblina o las nubes y los colores son en la gama de los azules asociados con el agua y el oceáno que ocupa un rol preponderante en esta historia asi como lo es en Chiloe y sus alrededores que es donde se filmo. Los ciclos de la vida, el amor, la energía del agua están todos representados en KO. Salvo un sólo detalle, este segundo film me gustó una enormidad. Cuando lo ví hace unos dias atrás, la canción “Aguamarina” de Gatti se me vino a la mente …
