Universos Paralelos

[Portrait by Gabriele Rigone]

A friend recommended “Déjà vu”[2006], a movie by British director Tony Scott with Denzel Washington as the main character; I watched it last night, and I liked it a lot! It is a love story and a thriller that makes a huge display of the latest surveillance technology and even manages to touch on quantum mechanics. I will not give away the plot; I will only say although this movie could appear to be a science fiction film, in reality is not. Well, I may be stretching it a little bit … Those who saw it, know that -although there is research going on the subject- the time travel part is still science fiction. But, everything else, surveillance through walls or multi-dimensional imaging, the latter currently used in design engineering, are capabilities which do exist in our modern world.

The movie even gives the audience a taste of the Parallel Universes Theory, you know … the one that says there is no one reality, that each of us lives in a separate universe, and where any universe one can imagine actually do exist. So somewhere there would be a universe where Elizabeth Taylor has brown eyes, or where you got married to someone else other than your current spouse, and Bill Gates is a sales employee at CompUSA, and so on. Fascinating, isn’t it? Perhaps the harmony of the theory of parallel universes made me look for my Taoist book today, to revisit once more its beautiful poems and philosophy. Of course, I was amazed, as every time I read it, that these thoughts were written approximately 2500 years BCE; in a parallel universe any of us could have written them :o) ... The following are some of the thoughts I like the most:

There is a thing confusedly formed
Born before heaven and earth
Silent and void
It stands alone and does not change
Goes around and does not weary
It is capable of being the mother of the world
I know not its name
So I style it “the way”
I give it the makeshift name of “the great”

Water is the softest thing on earth
Yet its silken gentleness
Will easily wear away the hardest stone

Be still like a mountain and flow like a great river.

Existe algo confusamente formado

Things

My best friends know I like things, in general … I like them with enthusiasm, total enjoyment. As I fall in love with a beautiful sunset, or a painting, I also do with a beautiful salad bowl being displayed at an antique shop, or whatever... The other day, we were discussing with a very good friend of mine, the fact that it is difficult for her to find something she really likes; she is very picky, which makes it hard to find something for her home. I envy her. Not me, I like everything and I see beauty in the oddest things. Often, I feel like a little girl in a candy shop looking at too many things that look delicious; it is fun, but is also a bit tiring. And, I am thinking about this, because I am excited for having found “Odes to Common Things” by Pablo Neruda, a book that had been lost inside my house since 2000 [I have several bookshelves]. What can one say about Neruda! Perhaps to mention the fact he was able to say anything and everything in a way that elevates the reader to another dimension …

Ode to Things by Pablo Neruda

I have a crazy,
crazy love of things.
I like pliers,
and scissors.
I love
cups,
rings,
and bowls -
not to speak, or course,
of hats.
I love
all things,
not just
the grandest,
also
the
infinite-
ly
small -
thimbles,
spurs,
plates,
and flower vases.
Oh yes,
the planet
is sublime!
It's full of pipes
weaving
hand-held
through tobacco smoke,
and keys
and salt shakers -
everything,
I mean,
that is made
by the hand of man, every little thing:
shapely shoes,
and fabric,
and each new
bloodless birth
of gold,
eyeglasses
carpenter's nails,
brushes,
clocks, compasses,
coins, and the so-soft
softness of chairs.
Mankind has
built
oh so many
perfect
things!
Built them of wool
and of wood,
of glass and
of rope:
remarkable
tables,
ships, and stairways.
I love
all
things,
not because they are
passionate
or sweet-smelling
but because,
I don't know,
because
this ocean is yours,
and mine;
these buttons
and wheels
and little
forgotten
treasures,
fans upon
whose feathers
love has scattered
its blossoms
glasses, knives and
scissors -
all bear
the trace
of someone's fingers
on their handle or surface,
the trace of a distant hand
lost
in the depths of forgetfulness.
I pause in houses,
streets and
elevators
touching things,
identifying objects
that I secretly covet;
this one because it rings,
that one because
it's as soft
as the softness of a woman's hip,
that one there for its deep-sea color,
and that one for its velvet feel.
O irrevocable
river
of things:
no one can say
that I loved
only
fish,
or the plants of the jungle and the field,
that I loved
only
those things that leap and climb, desire, and survive.
It's not true:
many things conspired
to tell me the whole story.
Not only did they touch me,
or my hand touched them:
they were
so close
that they were a part
of my being,
they were so alive with me
that they lived half my life
and will die half my death.

locamente.
Me gustan las tenazas,
las tijeras,
adoro
las tazas,
las argollas,
las soperas,
sin hablar, por supuesto,
del sombrero.
Amo
todas las cosas,
no sólo
las supremas,
sino
las
infinita-
mente
chicas,
el dedal,
las espuelas,
los platos,
los floreros.
Ay, alma mía,
hermoso
es el planeta,
lleno
de pipas
por la mano
conducidas
en el humo,
de llaves,
de saleros,
en fin,
todo
lo que se hizo
por la mano del hombre, toda cosa:
las curvas del zapato,
el tejido,
el nuevo nacimiento
del oro
sin la sangre,
los anteojos,
los clavos,
las escobas,
los relojes, las brújulas,
las monedas, la suave
suavidad de las sillas.
Ay cuántas
cosas
puras
ha construido
el hombre:
de lana,
de madera,
de cristal,
de cordeles,
mesas
maravillosas,
navíos, escaleras.
Amo
todas
las cosas,
no porque sean
ardientes
o fragantes,
sino porque
no sé,
porque
este océano es el tuyo,
es el mío:
los botones,
las ruedas,
los pequeños
tesoros
olvidados,
los abanicos en
cuyos plumajes
desvaneció el amor
sus azahares,
las copas, los cuchillos,
las tijeras,
todo tiene
en el mango, en el contorno,
la huella
de unos dedos,
de una remota mano
perdida
en lo más olvidado del olvido.
Yo voy por casas,
calles,
ascensores,
tocando cosas,
divisando objetos
que en secreto ambiciono:
uno porque repica,
otro porque
es tan suave
como la suavidad de una cadera,
otro por su color de agua profunda,
otro por su espesor de terciopelo.
Oh río
irrevocable
muchas cosas
me lo dijeron todo.
No sólo me tocaron
o las tocó mi mano,
sino que acompañaron
de tal modo
mi existencia
que conmigo existieron
y fueron para mí tan existentes
que vivieron conmigo media vida
y morirán conmigo media muerte

KO ... a film

[Fotografia del cortometraje KO]

… It means “Water” in Mapundungun, the language of the Mapuche Indians [from the South of Chile and Argentina]. What a shame not to be able to speak or at least understand it! When a language starts to disappear, takes the rest of the patrimony with it, everything or almost everything. Fortunately, it looks like there are some efforts being developed in Chile to preserve it; I do not know much about it, but I certainly hope so …

KO is the title of the new short film by Patricio Schmidt. This movie director kicks butt. In my opinion, his taste is fantastic; his films tell stories full of little but important details that talk about life, and deep transcendent events. All this through marvelous photography, and minimalist dialogs, emphasizing even more the power that images have on his films. The first short movie I saw from him is called Huinay, and was filmed in the Altiplano; the colors of this region impregnate this film, yellows, oranges, the blue of the sky … But in Ko, everything is seen through fog or clouds, and the colors are in the range of blue associated to water; the ocean occupies a main rol in this story, as it is in Chiloe and its surroundings where it was filmed. The cycles of life, love, energy from water, all of these are represented in KO. Except for one little detail, I liked this film enormously. When I saw it for the first time a few days ago, the song “Aquamarine” from Gatti came to my mind … [I apologize to my English speaking friends for not translating the song. It is more than a song really, is like a poem and perhaps, it would not even make sense, too much would be lost in translation.]

ESPAŇOL

estrellas y angelitos.
