[Painting of Selene, Greek Goddess of the Moon]For the last few days, whenever I have a little time, I have been reading about old Greek and Roman cultures from three sources at the same time, an 800-pages book called The History of Art, by H.W. Janson, which I love to read, but it is so difficult to handle; it is heavy and rather large; Women in Art by someone I can’t remember right now … and “Sacred Sex” by Robert Bates. I like to imagine myself living during this period of time, better said, I used to like to imagine myself, because I had completely forgotten how low women ranked in the social scale during this period in history! Women mainly served two purposes in ancient Greece: childbearing or prostitution. I am talking about the main stream; there were exceptions, of course. During the Roman empire, things improved a bit for us.
As a matter of fact, in ancient Greece, most men regarded marriage as a necessary social obligation. Intercourse between man and wife was hurried, more like a business matter –just for procreation. The only sexual relationship, which was respected for the emotional, as well as physical joy was that between the teacher and his teenage pupil. Socrates himself talked highly about the love, which an older man felt for the pubescent boys. Luckily for me, the Romans came to change all that mentality, providing women with more freedom and respect and making them desired sexual partners, again. And then, there was Ovid, considered, the finest poet in Rome, who wrote the famous long erotic poem, The Art of Love that influenced couples’ relationships forever. It surprises me that centuries ago, here was Ovid giving advise from how a man should conquer the other one's heart to how to undress each other, and of course other more sexually explicit details. So you have an idea of what I am talking about, here is a brief excerpt from The Art of Love:
… Their heaven, once opened, need never close
Let them learn variety, acquire artistry
Let each night of love have a different shape
Let her sometimes play the man, and he the woman
Let them sometimes be dogs or lions in the act of love
Let imagination run riot in their bodily battle
Then truly he will be a god, and she a goddess …
